Add targeted task lighting. Supplemental lighting at key activity areas — the kitchen counter, the reading chair, the bathroom mirror, the bedside — dramatically improves function at the times and places where it matters most. Under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen and illuminated magnifiers for reading are both highly effective.
Eliminate glare while increasing overall light. Matte finishes on countertops and tables, frosted lampshades, and indirect lighting arrangements reduce the glare that can be visually overwhelming for seniors with cataracts or AMD.
Install nightlights along pathways. The path from the bedroom to the bathroom is traveled multiple times per night, often when the senior is partially asleep and their vision is at its least effective. Motion-activated LED nightlights along this path are a high-impact, low-cost intervention.
Ensure immediate access to light sources. Light switches should be accessible immediately upon entering every room — never across the room from the door. Consider illuminated switch plates or motion-activated lighting for areas the senior enters regularly.
Contrast Enhancement
High contrast between surfaces makes objects significantly easier to see, regardless of the type of vision loss. Practical contrast enhancements include:
- Dark placemats under light dishes and light tablecloths under dark dishes
- Brightly colored tape or paint on stair nosings (the edge of each step)
- Contrasting colored tape marking key appliance controls — the most-used settings on the stove, washing machine, or microwave
- Light-colored toilet seat in a dark-floored bathroom (or vice versa)
- Brightly colored labels on medications and other important items
- High-contrast door frames and light switch plates
The goal is to ensure that the edges of surfaces, the location of controls, and the boundaries between different areas are as visually distinct as possible.
Organization and Spatial Consistency
Seniors with vision loss compensate significantly through spatial memory and tactile orientation — they know where things are because they have always been there. Disrupting this spatial predictability is disorienting and frustrating at best, dangerous at worst.
Establish a clear organizational system for all frequently used items — medications, kitchen items, personal care products, clothing — and maintain it with absolute consistency. Once the senior knows that their morning medications are always in the top-left compartment of the organizer, that their reading glasses are always on the side table, that the television remote is always in the same corner of the couch, they can navigate their environment effectively even with significantly reduced vision.
Communicate any changes in the environment before making them, and walk the senior through the new arrangement until they are comfortable with it.
Fall Prevention Modifications

- Keep all walkways clear and consistent — furniture should not be rearranged without informing the senior
- Use non-slip surfaces in the bathroom (non-slip bath mat inside the tub or shower, non-slip rug on the bathroom floor)
Daily Support Strategies for Caregivers
Communication and Approach
- Always announce yourself when entering a room or approaching the senior from outside their line of sight. Never touch them without warning — it can be startling and disorienting.
- Describe what you are doing before doing it, especially during personal care. “I’m going to help you with your jacket — I’ll start with your right arm” provides the context that allows the senior to participate rather than feeling acted upon.
- Use clock positions to describe the location of items: “Your water glass is at three o’clock” or “Your fork is at nine o’clock.”
- Speak directly toward the senior, at a normal pace and volume — vision loss does not affect hearing, and many seniors find the over-enunciation some caregivers adopt condescending.
Medication Management
Medication errors are a particular risk for seniors with vision loss. They may misread labels, confuse similarly shaped or colored pills, or take incorrect doses due to difficulty reading prescription instructions. Strategies to address this include:
- Use a weekly pill organizer filled by the caregiver or pharmacist, with each compartment clearly labeled in large print or tactile markers
- Ask the pharmacist to print all prescription labels in large print
- Use brightly colored or tactile labels to distinguish between different medications
- Consider blister packs from the pharmacy, which pre-organize doses by date and time
